Stone Circles in Ireland

One of the largest stone circles in south West Ireland it is located about 300m west of the town centre of Kenmare in an area known as "The Shrubberies" not far from the Cromwell Bridge. It comprises a ring of 15 heavy boulders, 13 upright and 2 prostrate, measuring 17.4 x 15.8m. At the centre is an impressive 7 tons boulder-burial with a giant capstone some 2m long, 1.8m wide and 0.8m thick. This circle is thought to form part of the funerary or ritual tradition of the Bronze Age, dating from between about 2400 BC and 500 BC. Parking is available in the main square of Kenmare. From there the Stone Circle is only a short walk down the road that adjoins the Tourist Information Office.
