Kenmare Heritage Centre

The Kenmare Heritage Centre tells the history of the town from its founding as NeidÃn by the swashbuckling Sir William Petty in 1670. The centre also relates the story of the Poor Clare Convent, founded in 1861, which is still standing behind Holy Cross Church. Local women were taught needlepoint lace-making at the convent, and their lacework catapulted Kenmare to international fame.
Hidden Gems of Ireland

Ireland has mystery coursing through its veins. Only those who appreciate it, as the Irish do, find out what that mystery is. Many a stormy and overcast day grace the cliff lined shores of Ireland, only adding to the intrigue it holds. As you stumble upon quaint villages on your way through the Beara Peninsula, you can almost taste the history surging through the land. Who couldn't resist holding up in a cottage near the coast with only an ancient lighthouse and the Atlantic for their view.
The Ring of Kerry is one of the Irish's most beloved locations. Encompassed by the green mountains on one side, and the ocean on the other, it has become a not-to-be-missed destination. An afternoon couldn't get much better than spending it on a bike, viewing Killarney at its best. When you are ready to escape the tourists, head out to Kenmare where the village looks like it was plucked out of a story book. Stone cottages line the small streets, and seem to welcome everyone who looks upon them with their beautiful flower boxes clutching the windows. The land of Kenmare definitely has clung tightly to tradition rather than conforming.
Getting lost usually isn't appealing, but when you enter Charles Fort one can't help it. Barracks, courtyards, walls and passages leave you relying on a map for release. Medieval & majestic, Trim Castle (King John's Castle) is a jaw-dropping vision into the past. Being impenetrable for over 4 centuries, you feel somewhat like a lucky trespasser when you are there. If you do happen to get lost, make sure you have WorldMate (great for Business Travel or personal travel!) loaded on your mobile device. Equipped with detailed maps, it'll get you back on track in no time!
Whether you are warming your fingers up by the fire in one of Ireland's famous pubs, or enjoying a walk through a picturesque village, Ireland is magnificent by nature. The lure of the land is impossible to refuse. Despite the salty ocean breeze chilling up the air, the warmth of the Irish will leave you feeling right at home!

Hands on Traditional skills and where to learn them

What are the styles and techniques involved? Numerous styles and techniques are used around the world. In Ireland the principal styles are Limerick lace, Carrickmacross lace – used for Kate Middleton’s wedding dress – Irish crochet and bobbin lace. For Limerick lace you use a needle and thread to stitch a design on to a toile or mesh cloth. You can also use a hook to pull the thread through mesh stretched over a tambour, or circular frame. For Carrickmacross lace you stitch the design on to fabric that you have fixed to the net, then cut away the unwanted fabric. For Irish crochet – Clones lace, for example – you use a crochet hook and very fine thread to make individual pieces of lace that you then stitch together. For bobbin lace – Mountmellick work, for example – you braid threads to form a pattern; the loose end of each thread is wound on to a bobbin, to make the threads easier to handle.
What kind of motifs might you incorporate? Roses and shamrocks have traditionally been popular; nowadays you’ll also see leaves, acorns and other flowers. “The motifs used in lacemaking are usually taken from nature,” says Mary Shields, a member of the Guild of Irish Lace Makers who gives classes in Ireland and abroad.

Theatre – Here We Are Again Still – Friday 13th May @ 8pm
Running as part of the Bealtaine Festival
Paddy sits on the same bench outside his flat every night, unable to sleep since the death of his wife. One day, Paddy is annoyed to find a troubled young man called Tony sitting on his bench...
Despite his reluctance to connect with anybody, Paddy strikes up a grudging acquaintance with Tony. As they build a tentative friendship, they catch glimpses of matches played in the nearby playing fields and all-weather ‘cages’ and realise they share a forgotten passion for soccer. But Paddy hasn’t coached since he lost his wife to cancer and Tony hasn’t played since he lost everything to heroin.
If there is any hope that each man can rekindle a passion for life, it is through this shared love for soccer, but can they leave enough of themselves behind to embrace the present and face the future?
Set in a concrete landscape on the edge of playing fields, Here we are again still is a moving and funny play about two broken men trying to make their way back from the margins.
